Chris & Adam with our hero Ken Costa
March swept in with its usual frenzy of tax-related tasks and virtual meetings, and amidst the hustle, there was Ken Costa – a name that would soon unravel into a captivating journey of connection, reflection, and unexpected twists.
A 30-minute windows in a Zoom call & I realize his tax situation was refreshingly simple, a far cry from the intricate puzzles that typically justify my fees. Moreover, his admission of being less tech-savvy hinted at a potential disconnect with my paperless approach.

Well I was with XYZ CPA firm. "They're putting an end to individual tax services," he shared, shedding light on the shifting tides within the industry.
"Pooja," he began, drawing me into his world, "once upon a time, everyone clamored to manage my taxes. Nowadays, finding someone who genuinely engages is a challenge."
Intrigued, I leaned forward. "And what did you do back in the day"
And so, a narrative unfolded that surpassed the boundaries of a professional dialogue. Ken had been a firefighter – a hero who had gallantly saved the city of Danville on numerous occasions. Notably, his valor had kindled a flame of service in his sons, who had chosen to follow in his footsteps. It was a legacy steeped in courage and camaraderie.
As Ken's story wove its way through the conversation, He mentioned his Bonds and Brotherhood: Fire Service Camaraderie Amid fires, crashes, and shared laughter, the fire service became more than a job – it was a brotherhood that defined my days .I found myself transported. The intricacies of his words blurred, allowing the essence of his life's journey to shine through. In this, my role as a businesswoman evolved into a deeper connection, an acknowledgment of shared humanity.
Emboldened by this newfound rapport, I extended a spur-of-the-moment invitation. "Can we convene in my office today at 3 PM? Please bring along your relevant documentation."
Ken's response was laced with a mixture of surprise and consideration. "Today? A face-to-face meeting with physical documents?" he mused, contemplating the logistics. "Though I initially have a golf game lined up, I'm willing to adjust my schedule."
My plea for punctuality was met with a flicker of enthusiasm. "Count me in. After all, I am a firefighter."
But what unfolded surpassed the bounds of a single appointment. Instead, it became a chapter of connection. Through a series of three appointments, we ventured beyond the realm of taxes, exploring the vast landscape of Ken's stories. We veered into discussions about family, dreams, his coaching experiences at Calhigh, and more.
And then, on the day of reckoning, Ken strode in with a check in hand, seeking resolution for his financial obligations. My response carried an unexpected twist: "You're not indebted; a refund awaits you."
The metamorphosis in Ken's expression was a sight to behold – a blend of astonishment and delight. A hug from his wife encapsulated their gratitude, an unspoken testament to our shared journey. As they departed, her words lingered in the air like a sweet melody: "We'll see you next year."
In that embrace lay a depth beyond any monetary quantification. It embodied the connection we had cultivated, a journey that extended far beyond transactions.
In the days that followed, my perception of Ken underwent a transformation. Spotted coaching on the football field or practicing his golf swing on the course, he was no longer just another client. With a nod and a knowing smile, I acknowledged the tapestry of shared stories that now linked us.
Ken's achievements were no longer mere entries on a tax form; they represented a legacy of service, bravery, and community. As our stories converged, a realization dawned upon me – within the pursuit of profit, the most profound moments are often those that resonate with the heart.
Bonds and Brotherhood: Fire Service Camaraderie Amid fires, crashes, and shared laughter, the fire service became more than a job – it was a brotherhood that defined my days.
Danville's Heart: Serving and Connecting Serving Danville deepened my ties. Responding to emergencies and forging bonds, I became woven into the community's fabric.
Impactful Adventures: From Adrenaline to Fulfillment My journey, from firefighting's adrenaline to coaching's fulfillment, reflects bravery and civic pride. Coaching, from my sons to high school athletes, is more than Xs and Os. It's about instilling life lessons, teamwork, and relentless improvement. As I shape young athletes' futures, I remember that coaching leaves a lasting legacy – molding character, building confidence, and making a difference, one player at a time
