Governor's Certificate of Valor: Recognizing Earthquake Rescue Efforts

March & its usual frenzy of tax season, new client meetings, long hours, longer weeks, and amidst the hustle, I met Ken Costa.
Almost at the end of my 30-minute Zoom intro, I realized his taxes were simple, a stark contrast from the intricate puzzles that typically justify my fees. His admission of being less tech-savvy could imply he's not quite ready to join my paperless revolution:). Was almost ready to move to my next appointment & close our call.
"Ken, you might want to try Burbo Bax, a tool for simpler tax returns."
He said, "Well I was with "XYZ" CPA firm for "x" years. They're putting an end to individual tax services," shedding light on the shifting tides within our industry.
"Pooja," he began, "People used to be eager to manage my taxes. Nowadays, it's a challenge to find genuinely interested help." Intrigued, I leaned forward. "And what did you do back in the day?"
And that's how his tax story went beyond just a professional conversation.
Ken had been a firefighter for over 30 years – a hero who had gallantly saved the east bay on numerous occasions. Ken said "Our days were busy with fires, car crashes, medical calls, gas leaks, drills, classes, inspecting commercial buildings, shopping, cooking, and some fun things. Lots of satisfaction in our job knowing you’re helping people in need in an emergency. Also been a coach throughout my life, for soccer, baseball, basketball and now I coach football at a High school."
As a tax professional my work frequently has personal and professional stories intertwine. Some resonate emotionally, while others engage my intellect. This one deeply moved me. Subsequently, thoughts of paperwork, fees, and schedules felt insignificant. I considered myself fortunate to work with him. Frankly, I found it hard to concentrate on the rest of our discussion.
"Ken, can we meet today at 3 PM? Please bring along your relevant paperwork."
Ken's surprised "Today? In person meeting with paper documents?? I had a golf game lined up."
I said, " Kindly be on time."
He said, "I will be & am a firefighter, we can't be late."
We met three more times :), in thtaxes hardly a topic. Met his lovely wife, talked of his sons, who embraced his legacy of serving the community, his golf, palm springs, and his stellar career.
His only query on taxes: "What do I owe?"
I replied, "You're getting a refund."
His wife warmly hugged me on the last meeting, & said, "We can't wait to see you next year." Appreciation is an essential motivator in my line of work. :)
A truly inspiring story! If you're around Danville & happen to see him, give Ken a wave and a thank you for his service. Kudos to our real-life heroes.
